How to Cure Constipation in Cats

By Katty Dicus

Most cats get constipated and it’s usually not serious, but it can be if not treated. It is caused from the commercial dry pet food and hairballs. If your cat’s diet is a totally dry food diet, then she will experience constipation quite frequently. 25% of vet visits from cat owners are due to severe constipation. Once you learn how to cure constipation in cats with natural remedies, your cat will look and feel much better.

Symptoms of a severely constipated cat are vomiting, dry dull coat, straining in the litter box, and lethargy. A constipated cat that is left untreated develops a “Megacolon”. The colon stretches like a rubber band and the feces gets stuck and can not pass through the small intestine. The colon actually quits working. It soaks up the water in your kitty like a sponge and she gets very dehydrated, quits eating and experiences pain trying to pass a stool.

If this is happening to your kitty, visit your vet so he can manually clean her out and give her IV’s to replenish her moisture. Once he does that, she needs to be on a high fiber diet. In the last stages of a megacolon, the vet will need to remove it, but your cat will live her life with frequent diarrhea.

If you suspect your cat is constipated, there are some simple remedies to give her. First, go to PetSmart and purchase the GNC Natural Hairball Treatment and give it to her as instructed. Add pumpkin to her diet and fish or salmon oil capsules. Poke a hole in the capsule and pour it on her wet food, or just put it in her mouth with your finger once daily.

George’s Aloe Vera is a great detox and wonderful for cats because there is no taste to it. You can add it to her water. It is available at your local health food store. Sodium Ascorbate Crystals is an antioxidant that all cats should be on. It is Vitamin C and helps boosts the immune system as well as keeping the kitty cleaned out. It is also available at your health food store.

I’ve had good luck with Olive Oil. Some cats like it and some don’t. It works for constipated cats and gives them a shiny healthy coat. Brushing your cat once daily helps remove loose hair. Cats spend a big part of their life grooming and they ingest fur and it gets stuck in the colon turning into a ball and if they don’t vomit it up it can cause a problem as more hairballs accumulate making it difficult to pass any feces. So keep your kitty on a maintenance dose of GNC Natural Hairball Treatment.

Most commercial pet foods do not have enough fiber in them. They are loaded with corn, wheat, fillers, artificial flavoring and coloring. Some have BHT and BHA which are chemical pesticides used as a preservative. A home-made cat food diet is the best, but you need to balance the vitamins, minerals and taurine. The next best is nutrient dense all natural canned food.

Animal protein should be the first ingredient. There are some good natural pet foods on the market. Three of the top foods are by Wellness, Wilderness by Blue Buffalo and Nature’s Variety. These pet foods are all natural with most of the food containing human grade animal protein.

By learning how to cure constipation in cats with these natural remedies, your cat will look and feel great and she will thank you for it.
